I had known John Dewey from Mrs. Knotts's third grade class at Sternberger. He and I won a twisting competition. He was a great swimmer and gone much too soon from this world.
I went through school with John. I never got to really know him, but have only heard good things about him. He was a swimmer for Grimsley and when the indooor pool was built it was dedicated to him, I believe Coach Sawyer helped make that happen. A very fine fellow.
I got to be friends with John at Kiser and began to take homework to him when he was first in the hospital in 9th grade. I visited him a lot in the hospital in 10th grade as well. I’ve often thought of the brave way he faced his cancer as I have faced my own long battle with cancer. I remember him with a luminary at Relay for Life and encourage others to do the same. John was a very special guy and has inspired me for years.
