Susan D. Prontaut (Groat)

Groat, Susan Prontaut

September 24, 1953 – February 23, 2023

Susan Prontaut Groat, 69, of Greensboro, NC passed away at her home in the early morning of February 23, 2023, after a prolonged illness. She was born in Charlotte, NC to Lloyd and Dorothy Prontaut. She graduated from Grimsley High School in 1971. After high school, she enrolled in college and ultimately worked her way through school, earning a nursing degree from GTCC. She went on to work the next four years at Wesley Long Hospital on the labor and delivery unit, an experience that she thoroughly enjoyed and would reflect fondly upon for years to come.

She married Dr. Robert Groat in 1978 and settled down to raise a family. By 1983 she was officially the mother of 4 and a full-time mom. She loved her children dearly. Perhaps the only thing that rivaled this love was the affection she had for her grandchildren. She enjoyed re-sharing photos of their precious moments. Even as her health declined, their presence would light up her face. She was also a superb cook. Her chicken, rice, and broccoli, macaroni and cheese, and pecan pie were responsible for many satisfying holidays.

Another defining part of her life was her unwavering faith in God. She devoutly read the Bible and often shared scripture with her family and friends. She invited her friends and community members into her home to pray for their loved ones and for those in need. She was an active member in her church until she fell ill and could no longer attend, but her faith never wavered.

Susan is survived by her children Richard Scott Groat (Elizabeth), Robert Brian Groat, Lauren Michelle Groat (Kevin), and Christopher Lanier Groat (Caroline) and their respective children (Allison, Charlotte, Jacob; Bryce, Brooklyn, Bennett; Conner, Peyton, Jordan; Austin, Spencer). She was preceded in death by her parents (Lloyd and Dorothy) and her two brothers, Ken Prontaut and Lloyd Prontaut II.

Services will be held at Westminster Gardens, 3601 Whitehurst Rd, Greensboro, NC 27410 on Saturday, March 4, 2023. Viewing will be from 12:30-1:00 PM in the mausoleum immediately followed by a service and graveside committal. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cathedral of His Glory (4501 Lake Jeanette Rd, Greensboro, NC 27455) or the charity of one’s choice.

Special thanks are extended to her numerous friends and caretakers who made her last days more joyous. Fond memories of Susan will be forever in our hearts.
